I’m about to start a new marathon training season! Yay!
I’ve really enjoyed this off-season and have 100% fallen back in love with running, especially without pressure or purpose. That being said, I’ve always loved running a lot of junk miles and it’s going to be hard to tone it down, focusing more on quality than quantity.
And so, here’s my little love letter to the sport, also known as 50 Reasons I Love Running:
- It’s the best way to appreciate where you are both geographically and physically
- You get to see your city in a whole new way
- Fresh air does you so much good
- You can run almost wherever you are
- It’s a great way to meet people
- Runners are an incredibly friendly bunch
- It can take your mind off what you’re stressing about
- Or allow you the time and space to process it
- It can be cheap if you want it to be
- It gives you an excuse to travel
- FREEDOM!
- Peanut butter
- Cake
- Pizza
- Frozen Yoghurt
- It’s an easy way to get from A to B
- It’s nice to be fit enough to run for a train if you have to
- There’s a satisfaction in seeing mini-muscles grow over time
- It gives me structure in life
- I get to listen to podcasts and great music
- I’m gradually getting leaner and fitter
- Running kit is so freakin’ comfortable
- Spending your life in lycra is pretty great and weekend makes you look like you have your shit together
- You know you can always run away from weirdos and murderers if need be
- Getting a proper deep sleep after a tough training session
- Having good enough fitness to do other things
- As a sport, running is just ridiculously convenient
- A good sweat never hurt anyone
- You can be as competitive as you want
- You get to go on random road trips for races
- Did I mention all the food?
- Being able to shut people down when they judge you for eating cake
- How good a 7up tastes after a long, hot run
- Warm coffee feels after a freezing cold run
- Winter becoming bearable when you get outside in it
- The ridiculously supportive community I’ve encountered, both online and in real life
- Shamelessly spending hours a week on Instagram fangirling over other runners
- And endless running blogs
- That really horrific breathlessness
- Surviving a shitty run, because it makes you better equiped to deal with the rest
- Having a goal to work towards
- But then again, so is the ability to run just because you can
- Being grateful for the body you have
- You don’t need a membership to be a runner
- You always make friends on race day
- Training hard means you get an excuse to treat yo’self
- Having cardiovascular fitness never goes out of style
- Trainers are so much more comfy than regular shoes
- Putting on fluffy slippers after a hard run
- Having a hot soak in the bath and then melting into the sofa after a long run.
Have I missed any?
Lots of love,
Pippa

50 as a minimum I’d say 🙂 Listening to the birds as the sun comes up while you are out running would be my 51st 🙂

Love this post, so many awesome reasons. One of myfavourite…those fluffy slippers. I’d have to add the ‘long hot shower post run’ . Way better after after a minimum of 10-15km.

Some inspiration for myself and others who find it hard to get out there (or impossible in my case!)

As many of us finish racing season for the year, or start to wind down for the colder weather, I thought I’d share an old post on the reasons I love running- and in particular, the reasons I’ll keep on running all year round, come rain or shine!

I love this list.
I went for a run yesterday just as it was beginning to drizzle. I actually love the way people look at me like I’m crazy when they see me run in the rain. It makes me feel hardcore and stuff, even when I’m wheezing through my mile.

Definitely! When I hear small children asking their parents why that woman is running in the rain/sleet/hail I always feel like a badass…and maybe like the kids are seeing an example? Or maybe they’re just seeing a crazy person… guess it’s all down to perspective!
